“Now I know what a camel feels like,” Chris said. He was tramping along the path to the church with half a ton of equipment in various satchels and bags slung over his shoulders and back. The walk along the cliffs became even more treacherous when you couldn’t use your arms, but they’d both finally agreed that a full-scale survey was vital for their report. Mary, when approached, pleaded a coach party of old folk she had to show round a local museum, so that left the two of them to cart all the clobber themselves. It was hardly the first time, but it was one of the roughest trips they’d ever done for work—and one of the furthest from a parked car. For once, even Jo had taken her share.

“You look a bit like one too,” she said.

“Thanks.”

“My pleasure.”

The sun was shining, the breeze carried the strong clean tang of salt, and Chris felt his spirits lift from the black ocean of the previous night. Looked at in the cool, clear morning light, Jo’s behaviour was, if not defensible, at least understandable. Due to a series of misunderstandings, she clearly thought he and Paulie were having an affair, and had taken matters into her own hands. She was probably every bit as hurt as he was, and once this case was over and they had some proper time together, he’d sit her down and talk things through.

A gap in a wall looked familiar from their previous trip; he thought they were probably getting close to their goal. Excitement began to prickle at the back of his neck. Although he didn’t particularly want to be attacked by the ghosts again, at least this time he was forewarned, and he couldn’t think of anything more thrilling than proving to the world that the paranormal really did exist.

The gap-toothed silhouette of the church soon appeared on the skyline, but although they could see their destination, finding the way to it without Mary was hard in this high land of stone and heath where every faint sheep track looked the same. They made two wrong turns up two paths that led to unclimbable walls, and Chris was beginning to think they’d missed the way. They plodded on, looking in vain for landmarks, until at last Jo stopped.

“Isn’t this where we turn inland?” she said, nodding towards a faint path amongst the stones since her hands were too full to point. “I seem to remember it lined up with the end wall of the church.”

Chris shrugged his rucksack. “Possibly. It looks exactly the same as the last two paths to me, but it can’t hurt to try.”

This time she was right. A few minutes later, they’d vaulted over the wall,
